Film Analysis

FILM 101: FINAL PAPER INSTRUCTIONS
Hello Class,
Please write a 5-7 page analysis of the themes presented in a feature-length film (examples: racism,
heroism, faith, justice, etc.). This paper must be on one of the films that you analyzed in a film brief.
Your paper should be double-spaced with 11 or 12-point font size and regular margins.
You may concentrate on one theme in the film (example: The film 3:10 to Yuma explores the concept of frontier justice and revenge versus the rule of law, which is a philosophical debate that is often found in films from the western genre).
You may also discuss various themes in your film (example: The horror film The Exorcist explores various societal fears concerning religion, social taboos, family dysfunction, and medicine).
DO NOT write your paper on one of the films that we analyze together in class (see the course syllabus
for the list of films we will analyze in class).
However, you may reference films that we discuss in class to support the analysis of your film.
Do not write a plot synopsis.
You may reference scenes from your film when making a point, but do not write lengthy explanations of what happened in the film.
Correct Example: In the film 3:10 to Yuma, Dan exhibited behavior that was consistent with the rule of law when he rescued Ben Wade from being electrocuted by the railroad workers. Ben’s captors were acting out of revenge and exacting frontier justice because Ben had previously killed the brother of one of the railroad workers.
Do not write a film review.
You may discuss all aspects of the film (costume, special effects, etc.) as they relate to your analysis of the film’s themes, but this assignment is not a film review. Refrain from critiquing the film’s quality
(directing, actor’s performance, costume design, etc.), as that is not the purpose of this paper.
Correct Example: In the film The Matrix, Neo wears a long, black coat similar to those worn by western genre heroes and historical figures Wyatt Earp and Doc Holliday in real life as well as the films Tombstone and Wyatt Earp. Later in The Matrix, this same coat calls to mind the image of flowing capes worn by superheroes such as Superman and Batman when Neo flies over the city. This costume design and visual imagery is used by the filmmakers as short-hand for the audience to correlate Neo, consciously or sub-consciously, with other well-known heroes from various genres.
