COMPREHENSIVE CASE ANALYSIS

  1. COMPREHENSIVE CASE ANALYSIS: This approach analyzes cases in 3 phases:
  • Problem Identification phase; 2) Analysis phase and 3) Solution phase. These phases are described briefly below and will be explained further in class, as we discuss and written assignments are introduced.
  1. Problem Identification: Diagnosing the Problem(s)
  • What are the major problems, challenges and issues raised in the case?
  • Are there any problems that are explicitly stated in the case? Are there any underlying problems implied and unstated in the case.
  • Some problems may be short-term ones (usually, tactical in nature).
  • Are other problems long-term, strategic ones?

2   Analytical Stage: Use of Data and Information to Understand the Problem and Search for Solutions

  • Use tools to analyze specific aspects of the problems and state how significant they are to the firm/organization. To do so, use any appropriate tools that can be used to determine the nature and significance of the challenges a firm faces.
  • Examples of analytical tools include (but not limited to) the following:
    • Analysis of data e.g on sales, costs, human resources, policies,
    • Financial Analysis
    • SWOT analysis: Examining the Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats of an organization
  1. Solution Stage: Search for Answers and Plans for the Future: Short-and Long-Term
  • Explore alternative solutions to the problems stated in 1) above
  • Choose the best solution sets, based on available information and environment
  • Make specific recommendations
  • Present a concrete plan of action, if the case has enough information to warrant such a plan
  • Present your recommendations and plan to a specific person or group within an organization, where necessary.
