At the beginning of the semester, each student will choose one date to complete a position paper and assist in leading the class discussion, subject to my approval. The paper (approximately 1,500 words) may do one, or a combination, of the following:
examine major themes in the readings for that week,
critique several of the readings,
follow one particular theme through several readings,
explore a subject closely related to the week’s topic, or
present a research design (or original research findings) related to that week’s topic.

Regardless of the perspective taken for the discussion paper, each paper needs to include:
at least one policy, legal case, or administrative rule affecting that week’s topic, and
at least one discussion question based on your paper to help facilitate the class discussion
(included at the end of the paper).
at least two peer-reviewed journal articles.
The purpose of this assignment is to dig deep into one of the topics for that week’s discussion. In preparing this discussion paper, you should draw on sources beyond those readings assigned for the week in the syllabus. These papers will contain an analytical or critical component; in other words, they need to be more than descriptive summaries of a week’s readings. Do not attempt to incorporate all of the week’s readings into a discussion paper.
By 11:59 p.m. on the Friday before our class meeting, you will post a paragraph summary of your paper and the discussion question in the affiliated Webcourses discussion thread. Other students will review the summaries and questions prior to class and will be ready to discuss them. For the weeks you prepare a discussion paper, you will facilitate our discussion. Late assignments will be penalized 10 percentage points for every 24 hours it is late.
