Your assignment is to write a 5-8 page paper choosing to investigate any stage of developmental psychology of your choosing OR any psychological theory we discussed this semester. You are then going to choose a phenomena within that stage/theory (conservation in infant development, peer pressure in adolescence, etc), and use your chosen theory to address this issue and not only incorporate it into your paper, but present this phenomena to the class.  You can show this phenomenon any way you would like: video, clips, music etc.

You are then going to present your topic to the class in a 5 minute presentation. The primary purpose here is to teach you how to engage in critical evaluation with evidence.

Given this assignment, you essentially have 5 tasks:  

  1. The stage in development/Theory: describe the stage of development, pioneers/founders, and major tenants of this theory/stage.  This requires doing two things: outlining the overall nature of the theory, and then explaining how this overall theory treats your specific phenomenon.
  2. The Phenomenon: identify a specific phenomenon, define it, and discuss its significance (i.e. geriatric depression, adolescent peer pressure, mid-life crisis)
  3. Research Evidence: You’ll need at least 4 outside sources in addition to any of our readings from class that you choose to include. Find at least two empirical articles about the phenomenon.
  4. Theory application: compare and evaluate the theory in relation to your phenomena.
  5. Pros and Cons to theory: You also need to address the usefulness of your chosen theory, as it relates to today, and offer the reader some conclusions based on the research you have reviewed in the paper.

  • You’ll need at least 4 outside sources in addition to any of our readings from class that you choose to include. Find at least two empirical articles about the phenomenon, and two additional readings that provide more in-depth information about the theory, or which provide an example of the theory being applied to a relevant topic.
